Step 1: Complimentary Phone Consultation

We begin with a complimentary phone consultation, during which we discuss your goals and wishes for your family history project. Generally, this takes half an hour or less and can also be done over the phone. We are happy to meet with you anywhere, though costs will apply if travel is involved. During this time, we will ask you about what family materials and documents you may have and will wish to include. We're also glad to make suggestions.

Step 2: Project Planning, Interviews, Material Gathering

You've decided to work with us: we're so pleased! Family history projects are unique, emotional, and fun. We want you to enjoy the process, and we'll do our best to help you with unsorted boxes of photos or family papers, documents, old films or videos. Each project includes a one-hour sit-down with the featured individual or selected family members, to plan project content and make a comfortable production timeline.

Next, you'll complete our biographical questionnaire. This will help focus your memories and allow us to get to know your and your family a bit before we sit down to begin saving your stories. What was it like when you were growing up? Where did you live? What were your parents like? Your room? Your home? What significant events were going on in the world at the time? How did you decide what to do for a living? What made you love it/hate it? Did you do community service work, or perhaps belong to a faith-based community? These are some of the questions we may ask you to consider, and the answers are ones only you can give; your memories are the gems your family will treasure for many generations to come.

Founder Alli Joseph or one of our skilled interviewers will then guide you through a conversational interview recorded on a digital audio device, if you're doing a book or other print project, or on digital video, if we're working on a video project. Interviews can run from two to twelve hours and can be completed over a period of days or weeks.

Step 3: Stories Come Alive

Our recorded conversations are then transcribed (for written projects) or fully screened (for video projects) by our experienced writing/production team - all of whom are journalists, historians or producers. The raw materials become the foundation of your project; together, you and Seventh Generation Stories collaboratively edit from this base. Your story comes alive, complete with all the sources you wish to include. They are the best way to illustrate your face and voice, and will help give an intimate feel to the memories we are capturing.

You will have several opportunities to review the project during our editing phase and give input or otherwise request changes. The editing process can take weeks or more, depending on the scope of the project. At the end of our time together, you will have a beautiful and lasting keepsake that conveys your special legacy for many generations to come.
